How did you develop an interest in mathematics? What has your learning experience been like in school up to this point? What challenges, socially and/or academically, have you faced in this journey?

My interest in mathematics started long before I came to the United States, but moving here as a high school sophomore was a big challenge. At first, I felt like I lost my voice because my English skills were limited. In school, I couldn’t easily understand or join conversations, even in my favorite class, math. Although numbers don’t need translating, I struggled to explain my thoughts or ask for help with difficult problems. I often felt frustrated and disconnected.

One important moment was when I spent hours on a math problem I couldn’t solve. My teacher patiently guided me with questions instead of giving me the answer, helping me think differently until I finally understood. This experience helped me realize that math is not just about answers, but about understanding the process. This has shaped my learning journey and made me appreciate critical thinking and perseverance.

What is your mathematical power? How has your work with Math Circles of Chicago helped you develop that power?

My mathematical power is my ability to think deeply and patiently about problems. Math Circles of Chicago has helped me build this power by encouraging me to explore different ways to solve problems and think critically, not just look for quick answers. This approach has made math more meaningful and enjoyable for me.

At Math Circles, I found a sense of belonging because it felt like a supportive community where everyone’s ideas are valued, no matter their background or skill level. I think one obstacle to belonging in advanced math spaces is the fear of making mistakes or being judged, especially for students who are still learning English or who feel behind. To help create a welcoming environment, I tutor younger students by asking guiding questions instead of giving answers, encouraging them to discover solutions themselves. This way, I help others feel confident and included, just like I was helped.

MC2 College Pathways is dedicated to helping students find their own pathway forward in STEM. Please describe your future plans for college and beyond.

I plan to attend a challenging university where I can continue to grow in math and STEM subjects. Math Circles of Chicago have prepared me by teaching me how to approach difficult problems with patience and critical thinking. Beyond just math, these skills help me in other subjects and in life. Whether or not I choose a STEM career, I know that the lessons I’ve learned about perseverance, problem-solving, and helping others will support me in any path I take.
